What we evaluated
Evaluation criteria: PR review as the default job, Cross-file and monorepo context, How a seat is billed. Conclusions are based on primary documentation, product evidence, and workflow fit — not hands-on benchmark runs unless noted. 6 primary sources checked.
CodeRabbit is the default when the job is AI comments on pull requests. Greptile is the alternate when the miss is something the diff does not contain, and the reviewer has to look up the rest of the codebase.
Greptile’s homepage says it builds a graph of the repo — files, functions, and dependencies — and reviews the pull request against that graph. The config docs say a .greptile/ folder can sit in any directory, with root defaults and per-directory overrides, and they use a monorepo as the example. Cross-repo context groups related repositories so a review in one can read the others.
CodeRabbit is still a pull-request reviewer, not an editor. Team includes multi-repo analysis. Advanced adds blast radius and architectural impact. Those are real, and they are not the same claim as Greptile’s graph index. Use CodeRabbit when the queue is ordinary PR review. Use Greptile when the reason you are shopping is the index.
Prices checked 9 October 2026 for Greptile, and 15 October 2026 for CodeRabbit. CodeRabbit’s plans docs say Free is PR summarization only, with code reviews in the IDE or CLI. Open-source projects get Team features on public repositories with no paid subscription. Essentials is $24 per developer per month billed annually, or $30 month-to-month. Team is $48 billed annually, or $60 month-to-month. Advanced is $72 per developer per month billed annually, or $90 month-to-month. The CodeRabbit button opens the product site, coderabbit.ai. Greptile pricing lists Starter free for one active developer and 50 credits a month, and Pro at $30 per seat per month with 50 credits included and extra credits at $1. A seat is a developer who received a review in that billing period. A base review is 1 credit, Plus is 3, and Apex is 10. Enterprise is custom and lists a self-host option. The Greptile button is greptile.com. It is not a tracking link. Those Greptile figures were not re-opened on 15 October.
Copilot code review, checked 15 October 2026. GitHub’s 2 October changelog makes Balanced the default review effort. An explicit Lite selection stays Lite. The code review docs say Balanced uses more AI credits than Lite: a review is typically about $0.05–$1 of AI credits on Lite and $0.25–$5 on Balanced. The 28 August changelog says that from 1 October 2026, existing Business and Enterprise customers paying by credit card or PayPal are charged upfront for assigned seats. Revoking a seat does not produce a prorated refund. A seat added mid-cycle is still prorated.
The wider shortlist is best AI code review tools. If the other job is refactor quality rather than a codebase graph, see CodeRabbit vs Sourcery.
What we evaluated: whether the product is a general PR reviewer, whether it indexes the repo for cross-file questions, and how a seat is counted. CodeRabbit won the broad default. Greptile won the monorepo and cross-repo index.
This call changes if CodeRabbit’s multi-repo and blast-radius features match that graph on the reviews you actually miss, or if Greptile matches CodeRabbit on ordinary PR coverage. Until then: CodeRabbit for the queue; Greptile for the index.
