What we evaluated

Evaluation criteria: Hosted backend versus in-browser project, How usage is billed, Who owns the data store. Conclusions are based on primary documentation, product evidence, and workflow fit — not hands-on benchmark runs unless noted. 6 primary sources checked.

Lovable is the pick when a founder wants a hosted app and a backend without standing up infrastructure. Bolt.new is the pick when a developer wants the project in the browser and a token allowance they can read. There is no single winner. The job decides.

Lovable’s Cloud docs, checked 9 October 2026, describe a built-in backend for database, auth, storage, and edge functions. It uses Supabase’s open-source foundation, and Lovable manages that instance. Supabase’s own note says a Cloud project does not appear in your Supabase dashboard. You can connect a Supabase project you own instead. That is a different setup from Cloud, and Lovable’s docs say there is no one-click move between them.

Prices checked 9 October 2026. Lovable’s plan docs price the workspace, not the seat. Free includes 5 build credits a day, capped at 30 a month, plus 20 Cloud credits a month. Pro starts at 100 credits for $25/month, or $250/year ($21/month). Business starts at 100 credits for $50/month, or $500/year ($42/month). Both paid plans run up to 10,000 credits a month. Unlimited workspace members share the pool.

bolt.new/pricing, on the monthly view the same day, listed Free at $0 with 300K tokens a day and 1M tokens a month, Pro at $25/month billed monthly with no daily token limit and a start of 10M tokens a month, and Teams at $30 per member per month billed monthly. This pass did not render a yearly dollar price, so this page does not quote one. Bolt’s token docs say most token use is the model reading and syncing project files. The product runs in the browser on StackBlitz WebContainers. Bolt’s repository describes that as prompt, run, edit, and deploy without a local setup.

Both buttons are product links. Lovable goes to lovable.dev. Bolt goes to bolt.new. There is no affiliate URL on either.

For the assistant that drafts the spec before either builder, see AI-assisted app prototyping. For Bolt against a general assistant, see Bolt vs Claude.

What we evaluated: where the app is hosted, how usage is billed, and who holds the database. Lovable won for a hosted MVP. Bolt won for an in-browser IDE and a visible token budget.

This call changes if Bolt’s default becomes a hosted backend like Lovable Cloud, or if Lovable publishes a token meter and an in-browser IDE that matches Bolt. Until then, follow the segment.
