What we evaluated

Evaluation criteria: Automatic filtering of new mail, Daily digest, Bulk cleanup and unsubscribe. Conclusions are based on primary documentation, product evidence, and workflow fit — not hands-on benchmark runs unless noted. 4 primary sources checked.

Clean Email is the tool when the mailbox is already full and the job is to delete, move, unsubscribe, and set rules. SaneBox is the tool when new mail should leave the inbox on its own and come back as a Daily Digest. They are easy to confuse because both touch newsletters. They are not the same job.

This is the page for a SaneBox alternative search. If the alternative you want is “filter my new mail, but cheaper or different,” Clean Email is the wrong switch. If the alternative you want is “clean what is already there,” Clean Email is the one. A full client replacement is a different decision: SaneBox vs Superhuman.

What each one actually does

SaneBox’s homepage, checked 12 October 2026, says it automatically filters unimportant email, unsubscribes with BlackHole, and sends a Daily Digest of unimportant mail you have not opened. It works in the email app you already use. Nothing to install.

Clean Email’s help describes a free account that can clean up to 1,000 messages (move, delete, trash, label, star). Premium adds the Screener, per-sender settings, the Unsubscriber, and Auto Clean rules. The Unsubscriber still trashes mail from a list that ignores the unsubscribe. That is cleanup and rules. It is not a learned filter with a digest.

SaneBox’s partial mark on bulk cleanup is BlackHole, the one-click unsubscribe on SaneBox’s own homepage. It is not a backlog cleaner.

This call changes if Clean Email grows a digest that replaces SaneBox’s filter, or if SaneBox matches Clean Email on bulk cleanup. Until then: Clean Email to clear the box; SaneBox to filter what arrives next.
