Claude Code vs Codex
Choose Claude Code if you already pay Anthropic. Choose Codex if you already pay ChatGPT. Segment by the subscription you have, hand-off versus in-editor work, and what heavy use costs.

Depends on the job
Stay on Claude Code if the seat is already Claude. Stay on Codex if the seat is already ChatGPT. Switch plans only when the harness, not the chat product, is the job.

What we evaluated
Evaluation criteria: Existing-subscription fit, Terminal harness versus in-editor hand-off, Heavy-usage plan steps. Conclusions are based on primary documentation, product evidence, and workflow fit — not hands-on benchmark runs unless noted. 5 primary sources checked.
Claude Code and Codex are both agent harnesses. The first cut is the subscription you already pay, not a feature matrix. Claude Code is on paid Claude plans. Codex is included in ChatGPT plans. An editor is a third decision: Cursor vs Claude Code.
This is two harnesses, not a thin three-way with Cursor. Cursor is an editor with its own usage pools. Folding it in here would hide the subscription question this page is for.

Claude’s pricing page includes Claude Code on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise, and not on Free. Pro is $17/month billed annually ($200 up front) or $20 billed monthly. Max is monthly only: Max 5x is $100/month and Max 20x is $200/month, at 5x or 20x Pro usage per 5-hour session. The Max plan article says those are web prices and that mobile checkout can differ. Limits are a rolling five-hour window plus weekly limits on paid plans, and Claude Code draws from the same pool as chat. Paid plans can add usage credits at API rates after a limit.
OpenAI’s Codex page says Codex is included in the ChatGPT plan. The cards on that page show Plus at $20 for focused coding sessions each week, Pro at $100 for higher limits across a workday, and Business at $20 per seat billed annually for two or more seats. Codex runs in ChatGPT, in an IDE extension, and in the terminal, on that same account. Cloud tasks are part of the product: work can continue when the laptop is closed.
The $100 Codex card is Pro 100, not the only Pro plan. OpenAI’s Pro tiers article lists three monthly prices: Pro 100 at $100, Pro 200 at $200, and Pro 500 at $500. Pro 200 includes more usage than Pro 100. Pro 500 has the highest included usage and is the only Pro plan with Ultrafast. New Pro 200 subscriptions that are not grandfathered include a lower allowance than the previous Pro 200 offer. Eligible subscriptions keep the previous allowance through October 29, 2026, then move to the lower allowance at the same $200 price.
At $20 and at $100
These are the two prices where a coding seat on each side lines up. Neither price is an editor subscription. Cursor is still a separate page.
$20: Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus. Claude Pro is $20 if billed monthly, or $17 per month with annual billing ($200 up front). Claude Code is on that plan and not on Free. Pro includes at least 5x Free usage per five-hour session, and terminal work shares that pool with chat. Weekly limits sit on top. ChatGPT Plus is $20/month and has no annual plan. The Codex page includes Codex on Plus for focused coding sessions each week. The ChatGPT Pro page lists limited Codex access on Free, so the $20 Plus seat is the first full focused-session plan, not the first time Codex appears.
$100: Claude Max 5x and ChatGPT Pro 100. Max 5x is $100/month on the web, monthly only. It is 5x Pro’s per-session allowance, still on a five-hour window, plus the weekly cap. Claude Code stays on that same pool. Max includes Claude Platform API credits on the pricing page: $100/month on Max 5x and $200/month on Max 20x. Pro does not. Rechecked 15 October 2026. ChatGPT Pro 100 is $100/month, monthly only, and Ultrafast is not included. The Codex page describes that Pro card as higher limits across a workday and across projects. Pro 200 and Pro 500 buy more ChatGPT usage. They are not the $100 comparison.
A developer who already pays one of these should use the harness on that seat. The $20 and $100 lines are for someone choosing which subscription to buy for coding, not a reason to add the second one.
Hand-off versus in-editor
Use the harness you already pay for when the job is a repo session, a cloud task, or a review that starts from a prompt. Use an editor when the job is multi-file edits, tabs, and staying inside the IDE. Codex’s IDE extension is still the ChatGPT account. It is not Cursor’s two-pool editor. If the team wants that editor, the page is Cursor vs Claude Code, and Cursor vs GitHub Copilot if the alternative is a plugin.
Do not add Claude Code on top of a ChatGPT seat, or Codex on top of a Claude seat, until the harness you have is actually the bottleneck. Do not read Plus or Pro as an editor subscription.

The Claude tool page covers the chat app, Claude Code, and Claude Design.
