What we evaluated

Evaluation criteria: In-editor multi-file agent edits, Terminal and agent-harness sessions, Usage-pool versus session-cap cost. Conclusions are based on primary documentation, product evidence, and workflow fit — not hands-on benchmark runs unless noted. 4 primary sources checked.

Cursor is the in-editor agent: multi-file edits, tab completions, and chat in a VS Code-style editor. Claude Code is a terminal and agent harness that rides the Claude subscription you already have. They are different surfaces. A lot of working setups run both.

This page is editor versus terminal. For two editors, see Windsurf vs Cursor. For an editor versus an IDE plugin, see Cursor vs GitHub Copilot. For Claude Code versus OpenAI’s harness, see Claude Code vs Codex. For the wider coding shortlist, see best AI coding tools. Notes on the chat app, Claude Code, and Claude Design are on the Claude tool page.

Cursor’s pricing page sells The X Subscription to new customers: Free, Plus $8/month, Premium $30/month, Super $100/month, and Ultra $200/month. Teams starts at $30 per user per month. Paid plans share one weekly usage pool across Cursor and Grok. Plus includes Grok models only. On Premium and above, third-party models are not included in the monthly price and are billed at API list price from the first request (models and pricing). Legacy Hobby, Pro ($20/month), Pro+ ($60/month), Ultra ($200/month), Teams Standard ($40/user/month), and Teams Premium ($120/user/month) continue for existing subscribers until they switch or cancel (legacy plans).

Claude’s pricing page lists Claude Code on every paid plan and not on Free. Pro is $17/month with annual billing ($200 up front) or $20 billed monthly, and that seat includes Claude Code. Max starts at $100/month and is monthly only: choose 5x or 20x more usage than Pro per 5-hour session. The same page lists new monthly Claude Platform API credits of $100 on Max 5x and $200 on Max 20x. Pro does not include those credits. Web, desktop, mobile, and Claude Code draw from one pool, with a rolling five-hour window plus weekly limits on paid plans. There is no separate Claude Code seat. When a limit hits, the published options are to wait, move up a plan, or turn on usage credits at standard API rates. Cowork is not named on that pricing page. Anthropic’s article Claude Cowork and chat are now one Claude says Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude, rolling out on Pro and Max.

Cost note. Claude Pro at $20/month includes Claude Code. Using Claude models inside Cursor needs Premium ($30/month) or above, and those third-party models are billed at API rates from the first request. A Claude Pro seat does not pay that Cursor bill.

When to run both

Use Cursor when the file tree is the work: refactors, tab-complete, and review in the editor. Use Claude Code when the job is a long terminal session, a scripted agent, or hand-off from a spec into a repo you are driving from the shell. The bills do not collapse into one. A Claude Pro seat does not include Cursor’s weekly pool, and a Cursor Premium seat does not include Claude Code’s subscription allowance. The other ways off this editor are on Cursor alternatives.

Do not buy Cursor as a Claude Code substitute. Do not cancel Cursor because Claude Code is “included” if the editor is where the team actually edits. Neither link on this page is an affiliate destination.

What we evaluated: where the agent sits (editor versus terminal), how usage is metered (dollar pools versus a shared session cap), and whether one subscription covers the other job. It does not.
