Don't pick Clay if

you only need occasional email drafts or a sequenced seat. Apollo is the cheaper all-in-one for that job.

Don't pick ChatGPT if

Your work is mostly outbound teams needing enrichment + research — Clay wins that workflow.

What we evaluated

Evaluation criteria: Enrichment workflows, Outbound personalization, Copy-only drafting. Conclusions are based on primary documentation, product evidence, and workflow fit — not hands-on benchmark runs unless noted. 5 primary sources checked.

Clay is the default when outbound needs enrichment and research. ChatGPT is the alternate when copy is the only missing piece.

Stay outreach-focused — not HubSpot-class CRM. See sales outreach ChatGPT vs Claude. For a sequenced seat instead of a workbench, see Apollo vs Clay.

What we evaluated: enrichment, personalization, and copy-only work. Clay won for GTM tables. ChatGPT won for copy-only seats.

Clay prices checked 7 October 2026 on clay.com/pricing. Free is $0: 6,000 actions a year and 1,200 data credits a year. It is a real free tier, not an empty or paid cell. Launch shows $167/month, starting at 180,000 actions a year and 30,000 data credits a year. Growth shows $446/month, starting at 480,000 actions a year and 72,000 data credits a year. Enterprise is custom. Actions and data credits are separate meters. The page offers an annual toggle marked save 10%, and in this check the printed dollar amounts did not change with the toggle, so confirm the annual invoice before treating $167 or $446 as already discounted.

If the constraint is cost and the job is sequenced outbound, Apollo’s published seats are the nearer buy: annual Basic $49 per seat per month. A visual tool such as Make is a honest split only when you need to move rows or branch a scenario after the data exists. Make does not replace Clay’s waterfall. The Clay button is the product site.
