How we evaluated this

Research-based. Grok plan cards on x.ai/pricing were rechecked October 15, 2026. ChatGPT Pro tiers were rechecked on OpenAI's help center on October 11, 2026. We did not run the same coding or research tasks in both products. ChatGPT leads the builder seat. Grok leads when the input is the live X feed.

Which of these are you?

Your pick

ChatGPT

ChatGPT is the maintained default seat for mixed coding, planning, and drafts. Grok's pricing page lists Grok Build, and that listing is not a coding-workflow win.

Tradeoff

Grok can be better when the task is mostly real-time x and public-web context.

ChatGPT prices match the sourced lines on the ChatGPT entity. Go and Plus still follow the Go announcement, checked October 2, 2026. Pro is three monthly plans on the Pro tiers article, checked October 11, 2026: Pro 100 at $100, Pro 200 at $200, and Pro 500 at $500. Pro 200 includes more usage than Pro 100. Pro 500 has the highest included usage and is the only Pro plan with Ultrafast. New Pro 200 subscriptions that are not grandfathered include a lower allowance than the previous Pro 200 offer. The monthly price stays $200. Grok prices are the plan cards on x.ai/pricing, rechecked 15 October 2026. The sheet is The X Subscription: Free at $0, Plus at $8/month, Premium at $30/month, Super at $100/month, and Ultra at $200/month. SuperGrok and SuperGrok Plus are not the current card names. Each tier includes a usage pool shared across Grok and Cursor, and the allowance refreshes weekly. Plus includes Cursor. Premium and above add Cursor cloud agents, code hosting, and AI code reviews, and third-party models in Cursor are billed separately. An October 2 check read real-time web and X search, voice mode, and connectors on the free card, and SOC 2 on the Free and SuperGrok cards. This pass did not see those lines, so they are not repeated as current card claims.

Pick ChatGPT if one seat has to cover code, a spec, and the draft that follows. That is the same default as ChatGPT vs Claude. Grok’s pricing page lists Grok Build. A line on a pricing grid is not a reason to move a coding team.

Pick Grok if the missing input is the live X feed. Open grok.com for that job, including on the free card. If the research job is cited web answers rather than X, use Perplexity vs ChatGPT for research.

What we evaluated: vendor plan cards, the real-time X search line, and whether either product is the coding and builder seat. Grok’s cards were checked October 2, 2026. ChatGPT Pro tiers were rechecked October 11, 2026. This is not the personal-agent shortlist. That decision is Meta Muse vs ChatGPT Work vs Gemini Spark.
